Could you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about your work?
I’m a printmaker, surface designer, writer and textile artist based in New York’s Hudson Valley. My work is inspired by the aesthetic maximalism of the 1970s and 1980s, by my garden, and by the light and textures of the landscapes that surround me.
How did you get started with illustrations and design?
Depending on how you look at it, artist is either my second or fifth career. I started my working life in education and educational nonprofits. I then briefly ran my own stationery business, took a few detours through business operations, human resources and consulting before becoming a full-time working artist (again).
What is your creative process like day to day? Where do you draw inspiration from?
I draw every day, usually in a section of my studio dedicated solely to drawing, but sometimes at my dining room table or in front of the tv. While I have a large studio, most of that space is devoted to screenprinting and computer work. I like drawing in cozy spots!
Can you give us a little insight into what inspired the design behind Wren?
I lived in California for almost my entire life before moving to the Hudson Valley four years ago, so I’m still getting used to having four seasons and very cold weather! I’m an avid gardener, and spend the winter months designing the next summer’s garden - which means buying seeds and starting them indoors. I know it’s time to start working in the garden when the birds return in early spring. Wren captures that early spring feeling, when the birds start building nests and the tulips and daffodils start pushing their way through the earth.
With this beautiful print, Jen's now has a much appreciated connection to babywearing. In addition to her incredible and creative work as an artist, Jen also has written two books and teaches art classes. We are so excited to bring her design to life with Wren!
